Sharing Web Resources

The web resource I am studying is the NIEER. Some of the information that is relevant to my professional development are the online newsletters featuring the current hot topics. These topics keep me up to date with what is occuring in the early childhood field. The information that this website adds to my understanding is up to date information of current and developing policies as well as scientific studies and research that the early childhood field is doing

In researching the site I found an article called A tough critique of Common Core on early childhood education (2013) by Valerie Strauss in which it explores the committees that make up core standards for K-12. I found this article interesting because in the creation of standards for children no one on the committee panel was a K-3 classroom teacher or early childhood professional, and the committee panel consisted of 135 people. Strauss stated, "The early childhood teachers and child development experts were excluded from the K-3 standards- writting process" (Strauss, 2013).

  1. I would have liked it if the website I selected had hot topics. These seem very interesting.

I wonder what the logic was in excluding early childhood teachers from this project? I would think that we would have had a lot to contribute to the panel.

  2. Tiffany you chose a great website. However, a few weeks ago our Head Start employees as well as Elementary teacher were in a training about Common Core. It was very interesting.

  3. Additional trainings are extremely important for early childhood professionals. There are always new findings and new ideas to understand within in the field of early childhood. I feel as though the completion of annual trainings is extremely important and allows teachers to perform to their highest ability

  4. I can't wait to read the article on the Common Core! I will be looking it up this week.

This is an area I have a lack of understanding in at it is. I continue to have a hard time connecting the dots between quality standards and common core- probably because my state does not currently have a document or crosswalk created.

  5. I would love to read the article on Common Core. It is so important in the United States schools. Everything is getting to be so much harder in the curriculum for our children because of common core. If parents do not know about common core they may need to read up on it to prepare their children.

  6. I haven't heard of common core, I know we were using "Open Court" as a literacy program, but after reading the information on your blog, I just learned that now its been dropped? The website is http://ccss.lausd.net/ with new content and standards. I wonder how does this affect students graduating with their teaching credentials as the content has changed.
